WhatsApp Business, a popular instant messaging app, has introduced a range of exciting updates for Indian users. Now, millions of people in India can conveniently make payments for products and services directly through WhatsApp. This strategic move by Meta aims to enhance its revenue from India, one of its largest global markets. During the announcement of this payment solution for Indian users, Mark Zuckerberg, Meta’s CEO, acknowledged India’s prominent position as a world leader in digital payments.
In collaboration with PayU and Razorpay, Meta unveiled its plan to facilitate payments in India via debit and credit cards, net banking, and UPI apps. During a virtual address at the Conversations 2023 event, Mark Zuckerberg highlighted that this new feature enables customers to make payments to Indian businesses almost instantly. He also emphasized Meta’s commitment to expanding the payment methods available within chat threads.
Zuckerberg stated, “Now, as you know, we’ve launched our own payment solution in Brazil and in Singapore, and today I am excited to announce that we are bringing this service to India. With payments in India, we’re going to support other payment methods as well, including all UPI apps. This is going to make it even easier for people to pay Indian businesses within a WhatsApp chat using whatever method they prefer.”
Additional Features for WhatsApp Business:
In addition to in-chat payments, Mark Zuckerberg unveiled other enhancements for Indian businesses on WhatsApp. Meta is introducing “Meta Verified” for businesses using WhatsApp, Instagram, and Facebook. This verification provides businesses with a verified badge, account support, impersonation protection, and additional features to increase visibility. WhatsApp Business subscribers will gain access to premium features, such as a custom web page and enhanced multi-device support.
Furthermore, Zuckerberg shared insights into WhatsApp Flows, which empower businesses to create customized experiences directly within chat threads. This functionality enables banks to facilitate customer appointments for account openings, food delivery services to streamline orders from partner restaurants, and airlines to offer flight check-ins and seat selection—all within WhatsApp.
