Recent reports have highlighted an intriguing discovery on the deep seafloor, sparking considerable interest among researchers. NOAA Ocean Exploration scientists encountered a distinctive yellowish object during a dive in the Gulf of Alaska, initially referred to as the Yellow Hat and now affectionately dubbed the Golden Egg or Golden Orb.
According to a detailed blog post shared by NOAA Ocean Exploration, this mysterious object, slightly over 10 cm in diameter, was firmly attached to a rock amid a backdrop of white sponges. A small hole or tear near its base revealed a similarly colored interior, intensifying the mystery.
Scientific theories initially ranged from it being a deceased sponge attachment to coral or an egg casing. However, the object’s true nature continues to elude scientists.

Sam Candio, an expedition coordinator at NOAA Ocean Exploration, expressed the enigma surrounding the find, stating, “Isn’t the deep sea wonderfully enigmatic? Although we were able to retrieve the ‘golden orb’ and bring it aboard the ship, we are still unable to definitively identify it, except that it is of biological origin.”
Candio explained that their plan is to conduct further investigations in a laboratory setting, leveraging the expertise of the scientific community and advanced tools to unravel the mystery. He also emphasized how this discovery serves as a reminder of the limited knowledge we have about our own planet, underlining the vastness of the unexplored depths of our oceans.
On the internet, reactions have been diverse, with netizens sharing their own speculations. Some consider it an intriguing colony of something, while others ponder if it could be a component of a rocket. The general consensus is one of fascination and curiosity.
The precise connection of the ‘golden egg’ to a new species or an unknown life stage remains unclear. Nevertheless, researchers are dedicated to uncovering the secrets concealed within this enigmatic discovery.
