Nitesh Tiwari, the acclaimed filmmaker behind movies like ‘Dangal’ and ‘Chhichhore,’ is no stranger to the world of criticism and feedback. In an exclusive interview with IndiaToday.in, he shared his perspective on how he deals with criticism, emphasizing the importance of constructive feedback.
The Importance of Feedback
Tiwari acknowledged the significance of feedback and the role it plays in the creative process. He mentioned that while it’s impossible to please everyone, he values feedback as a means of improvement. “The golden rule we follow is we cannot please everyone,” he stated.
Seeking Constructive Feedback
Elaborating on his approach to feedback, Tiwari explained, “Feedback is extremely important. Most of the time, I write with my writer friends, but everybody is there to give feedback. I normally take feedback from people who can be blunt to me because it is easy to say nice things. I am, however, interested in constructive feedback.”
He emphasized the importance of surrounding oneself with individuals who can provide honest and direct feedback. “I am looking to making it better,” he added.
Navigating the Writer’s Journey
Tiwari also discussed the challenges of the writing process, highlighting the need for bold decisions. “It is a very lonely process, and you have to take a lot of gut calls,” he noted. He cited examples from his films like ‘Chhichhore’ and ‘Dangal,’ where he had to make unconventional choices as a writer.
He emphasized the importance of staying true to the story and not succumbing to clichés. “You may succeed sometimes and sometimes not, but that’s a part and parcel of this job,” Tiwari said.
Accepting Criticism in the Right Spirit
When asked how he handles criticism, especially when it’s related to a particular project, Tiwari stressed the importance of understanding the context and perspective of the critic. “You have to take it in the right spirit and understand the context and the place the person is coming from,” he explained.
He added that if criticism aligns with his creative vision, he accepts it gracefully. However, if it doesn’t resonate with him, he doesn’t let it bother him. “You cannot please everyone. The more you accept it, the more you will be at peace,” he concluded.
