After a Gap of 4 Years, Luxury Train Deccan Odyssey Returns to the Tracks

The Deccan Odyssey, one of India’s most opulent and luxurious trains, has made a grand comeback after nearly four years of being out of service. The Maharashtra Tourism Development Corporation (MTDC) relaunched this iconic luxury train, and its inaugural journey was flagged off by Maharashtra Assembly Speaker Rahul Narvekar. The train embarked on its maiden journey from Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) in South Mumbai to Panvel, marking the revival of this celebrated train’s operations.

The Deccan Odyssey has earned a reputation as one of the most luxurious train journeys in India, and its return is met with enthusiasm from travel enthusiasts and luxury seekers. This luxurious train promises a remarkable and unforgettable journey through some of India’s most culturally rich and historically significant destinations.

The inaugural journey from Mumbai to Delhi spans seven nights and eight days, with scheduled stops at Vadodara, Jodhpur, Jaipur, Agra, Udaipur, and Sawai Madhopur. The train offers a unique opportunity to explore the cultural heritage and diverse landscapes of India in the lap of luxury.

For those interested in experiencing the Deccan Odyssey’s lavish journey, the cost per person for this seven-night expedition is INR 6.5 lakhs. Couples can reserve two seats at approximately INR 9 lakhs, making it an exclusive and extravagant travel experience.

The MTDC has meticulously refurbished the Deccan Odyssey during its hiatus, ensuring that it meets the highest standards of luxury and comfort. Some of the notable upgrades include the installation of fire extinguishers in each coach, replacing LPG gas with induction in pantry cars, modifications to gangways to facilitate easy coach-to-coach movement, and the addition of new air suspension trolleys for a smoother ride. Furthermore, all coach toilets are now equipped with bio tanks, an eco-friendly feature absent in the earlier version of the train.

Travelers on the Deccan Odyssey can enjoy modern amenities such as intercom systems and Wi-Fi connectivity. The train boasts lavish furnishings, a music system, comfortable beds, and an efficient air conditioning system, ensuring a regal and comfortable experience. The Deccan Odyssey comprises 21 coaches, including ten coaches with four deluxe cabins each and two coaches housing presidential suites.

The Deccan Odyssey made its debut in 2004 when it was inaugurated by former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee. It garnered immense popularity among tourists from 2004 to 2020, offering an unparalleled luxury train experience. Unfortunately, the COVID-19 pandemic forced the train to suspend its operations in 2020-21.

MTDC officials have appointed an operator for the Deccan Odyssey on a turnkey basis. The operator’s mandate includes conducting 40 tours in Maharashtra initially and subsequently expanding the service to cover other premium tourist destinations across India.

With its relaunch, the Deccan Odyssey once again offers travelers a chance to embark on a luxurious journey through the heart of India, exploring its rich cultural tapestry and historical landmarks while experiencing the epitome of luxury travel.
