Landslides Block Jammu-Srinagar National Highway, Claim Four Lives

In a tragic turn of events, landslides have struck Kishtwari, Pather, and Banihal, leading to the blockage of the crucial Jammu-Srinagar National Highway. The Jammu and Kashmir traffic police have reported this incident, prompting an immediate halt to traffic movement on the highway from both directions.

This natural disaster has not only disrupted transportation but has also claimed the lives of four individuals, including two sets of brothers. Local authorities have confirmed that the landslide engulfed their vehicle on the national highway in Banihal, located in the Ramban district, on a fateful Tuesday morning. The immense force of the landslide tragically resulted in the loss of four lives.

In response to this unfortunate incident, the traffic police have issued a vital advisory, urging all travelers to seek confirmation from the Traffic Control Unit (TCU) before attempting to navigate the affected highway.

Jammu and Kashmir Traffic Police took to social media to share a crucial update, stating, “Traffic update @ 0700 hrs. Jammu Srinagar NHW blocked because of landslide at Kishtwari Pather Banihal. Traffic stopped from both ends. People are advised not to travel on NH-44 without confirmation from TCUs.”

This incident comes as a stark reminder of the region’s vulnerability to landslides and the need for vigilant monitoring and preparedness. It also underscores the importance of seeking real-time information and guidance from local authorities during such challenging situations.

Last month, a similar landslide occurrence disrupted the annual pilgrimage to the sacred cave shrine of Shri Amarnath, temporarily blocking the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway in Ramban district. In response to that incident, Jammu and Kashmir Traffic Police issued an advisory emphasizing the significance of confirming road conditions with the Traffic Control Unit before embarking on journeys along the highway.

As residents and travelers in the region grapple with the aftermath of these landslides, safety precautions and responsive measures remain paramount to safeguard lives and maintain essential transportation routes.
