
In a remarkable display of sailing prowess, Indian sailor Neha Thakur clinched the silver medal in the girl’s dinghy ILCA-4 event at the Asian Games 2023 held in Ningbo, China on Tuesday. Neha’s achievement marked India’s first medal in the sport at the prestigious event.
Neha Thakur, a promising talent hailing from the National Sailing School Bhopal, exhibited her sailing skills throughout the competition. She concluded the event with a total of 32 points, but it was her net score of 27 that secured her the second position in the competition, just behind the gold medallist Noppassorn Khunboonjan of Thailand.
Singapore’s Kiera Marie Carlyle also delivered an impressive performance and claimed the bronze medal with a net score of 28.
In sailing competitions, the competitor’s worst score from all the races is subtracted from the total points to determine the net score. The sailor with the lowest net score is adjudged the winner. In this case, Neha Thakur’s consistent performance and ability to minimize her worst score led to her silver medal triumph.
The girl’s dinghy ILCA-4 category at the Asian Games 2023 included a challenging 11 races. Neha’s dedication and skill in the sport shone through as she secured a well-deserved place on the podium. The ILCA-4 category is defined as a one-design dinghy class in the laser series and is recognized as a one-design class of sailboat, emphasizing skill and technique in the competition.
