India Suspends Visa Services in Canada Amid Diplomatic Tensions

In a recent development, India has suspended its visa services in Canada, citing “operational reasons.” This decision comes against the backdrop of heightened tensions between India and Canada, which have led to diplomatic expulsions from both countries.

A private agency named BLS, responsible for initially reviewing visa applications from Canadians, posted a notice on its website, stating that Indian visa services have been temporarily suspended, effective September 21, 2023. They have urged applicants to check the BLS website for updates.

The suspension of visa services for Canadians is believed to be a result of the ongoing disagreement between India and Canada. Tensions escalated following a contentious discussion on the Khalistan issue between the Indian and Canadian Prime Ministers during the recent G20 meeting in Delhi. Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau mentioned that his government was investigating “credible allegations” linking Indian Government agents to the killing on June 18 outside a Sikh cultural center in Surrey, British Columbia.

India has vehemently denied any involvement in the assassination, considering the accusations baseless. In response to these developments, tensions between the two countries have escalated, leading to reciprocal actions. Canada expelled an Indian diplomat, prompting India to take a similar measure.

Trudeau emphasized that Canada’s intent was not to provoke India but to address the matter seriously, stating, “The government of India needs to take this matter with the utmost seriousness. We are doing that; we are not seeking to provoke or escalate.”

Considering the current circumstances, individuals planning to immigrate to Canada are concerned that the deteriorating relationship between the two countries might impact their immigration process. Immigration experts have suggested that Canada may welcome immigrants to bolster its economy, but there could be temporary restrictions in place.

The situation continues to evolve, and both countries are closely monitoring developments in this diplomatic standoff.
