The concert featuring renowned composer AR Rahman, titled ‘Marakkuma Nenjam,’ held in Chennai on September 10, has garnered attention due to serious mismanagement issues. In response to the chaos and inconvenience caused during the event, Tambaram police officials have taken action by registering a case against the event organisers, ACTC Events.
The concert, marketed as India’s biggest musical extravaganza, was hosted at Adityaram Studios in Chennai and attracted a massive crowd. However, the large turnout led to a stampede-like situation and raised concerns about the event’s organization. Numerous attendees reported difficulties, including overcrowding, denial of entry despite valid tickets, allegations of molestation, and children being displaced.
Following numerous complaints related to oversold tickets and traffic congestion, Tambaram Police initiated an investigation into the matter. Subsequently, a case has been filed against the Managing Director of ACTC Events, Hemanth Raja, and two others under sections 188 and 406 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).
The concert, which AR Rahman and ACTC Events claimed had over 40,000 attendees, exceeded its stated capacity, resulting in unfortunate experiences for many concertgoers. Some fans who had purchased tickets for Rahman’s ‘Marakkuma Nenjam’ concert were unable to gain access due to the overcrowding.
Reports suggest that the event organisers had oversold tickets, leading to chaotic scenes at the concert venue. Several women in the crowd also alleged incidents of molestation.
Additionally, the concert caused significant traffic disruptions in and around the area, with even the convoy of Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin getting stuck in a traffic jam for a period.
In response to the issues faced by attendees, AR Rahman and ACTC Events have initiated refund procedures for those who were denied entry to the event.
